The Ghana Education Service (GES) has approved boarding status for Loggu Community Day Senior High School in the Wa East District of the Upper West Region, a development expected to improve access to secondary education and ease challenges faced by students in the area.

The approval was communicated in a letter dated June 10, 2026, and signed by the Director-General of GES, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis. The decision allows the school to operate as a Day/Boarding institution, bringing an end to years of advocacy by community leaders, parents and stakeholders for boarding facilities.

As part of the directive, GES instructed the Upper West Regional Director of Education to post the necessary personnel to the school and advised the school’s management to engage the Free SHS Secretariat on implementation arrangements.

Speaking during the inauguration of a Children’s Parliament in Bulenga, the Wa East District Chief Executive, Adamu Shaibu, described the approval as a major milestone for education development in the district.

According to him, Loggu Community Day Senior High School remains the only government senior high school in Wa East, making the introduction of boarding facilities critical to expanding access to quality education.

“This intervention will bring significant relief to parents and students within Bulenga, Loggu and surrounding communities. It will improve access to secondary education and create a more conducive environment for teaching and learning,” he stated.

Prior to the approval, many students who lived far from the school were compelled to rent accommodation in nearby communities or travel long distances each day to attend classes. Parents and education stakeholders have long argued that the situation negatively affected attendance, punctuality and academic performance.

The decision has been widely welcomed by residents. Assembly Member for Loggu, Abdul Sarkuu Iddrisu, said the move addresses one of the major barriers preventing many students from fully benefiting from secondary education.

“We are grateful to GES and government for listening to us. Our children will now have a safe place to stay and focus on their books instead of worrying about transport and rent,” he said.

The approval comes as the district intensifies efforts to promote child participation in governance and decision-making through the newly inaugurated Children’s Parliament, which is expected to provide a platform for young people to raise concerns affecting education and community development.

With the new boarding status now in effect, Loggu Community Day Senior High School joins a growing number of community day schools across Ghana that have been upgraded to enhance equitable access to quality secondary education under the Free SHS programme.
