The Member of Parliament for Wa West Constituency, Rt. Peter Lanchene Toobu has condemned attacks on Police Officers stationed in Wechiau, the District Capital of Wa West after concerns were raised about a Murder suspect, Abu Tijani’s Demise in Police Custody. The Wechiau Traditional Council called for swift Investigation into circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death in Police Custody.
The Upper West Regional Commander of Police, DCOP Mr. Francis Yiribaare Called for civilians to stop attacking police officers in Wechiau indicating that, of the practice continues the Police Station is likely to be relocated from Wechiau.
Statement of Member of Parliament Below:
As dangerous as this conditional proposition or thought is, I will call for reflection on the part of the Regional Police Command and that of the residents of Wechiau and its environs.
In fact, attacking police personnel or state infrastructure as a way of expressing disagreements should never be the way to go. Unprofessional policing is reportable to higher police command and let no one take the law into his own hands to attack a police officer or a police station. The consequences are dire.
Crimes do not expire and natural delays in criminal investigations cannot be a justfication for renewed violence. Such can only be cyclical, destructive and shameful.
Let me also appeal to the youth of Wechiau traditional area to calm down, reflect on the image-damaging effects of our own actions (aggression and violence) on the Capital in particular and the district as a whole.
Let’s pull the breaks, change direction and seek lasting peace. One life lost is one too many.
I SHALL LIAISE with the Regional Police Command and even with the IGP if need be, for the people and the police to continue to work together.
May the souls of ALL the departed rest in peace. I convey my deepest condolences to all bereaved families.
We want justice for all lives lost
We want peace for development
Let’s ceasefire, reconcile to build
This shall pass. Inshah Allah.
