The Wa Municipal Assembly has officially commissioned 17 young men as City Guards in a historic first for the metropolis, during a ceremony attended by key officials and residents.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Wa, Hon. Alhaji Nurah Issah, announced that he initially prepared 25 candidates for the exercise. Following a rigorous screening process before presenting them to the military for training, 18 candidates were selected. Of these, 17 successfully graduated, with one participant dropping out during training.

Hon. Nurah Issah emphasized the importance of the new security unit, stating, “These individuals were carefully chosen because we believe they have what it takes to become the peacemakers and guardians of the Wa Metropolis. They understand our communities, challenges, and aspirations.” He outlined the core mandate of the City Guards, stressing collaboration with authorized security agencies and adherence to the law. The Head of the City Guards will report directly to the Metropolitan Chief Executive, and their success will be measured not just by arrests but by the positive impact they create across the metropolis. Key performance indicators include reducing unauthorized trading, improving sanitation compliance, respecting by-laws, reducing disorder, and ensuring a cleaner, safer Wa.

Hon. Danwanaa urged residents, traders, motorists, and stakeholders to cooperate with the Guards, emphasizing they are here to serve and protect the community. “They are not your enemies; they are here to make Wa a better place,” he said. He also expressed gratitude to the 10 Mechanized Battalion and partner security agencies for their support and the training provided, marking a significant milestone in the security architecture of Wa. This inaugural passing-out ceremony sets the foundation for a new era of community-led security efforts in the Upper West Region.
