The long-abandoned Ghana Post Office in Nandom of the Upper West Region is expected to resume operations before the end of the year, bringing relief to residents and businesses in the area.
The Acting Executive Secretary of the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission (PCSRC), Mr Cosmas Mweyang Anpengnuo, gave the assurance during a working visit to the Nandom Municipal Assembly on Saturday.
Mr Anpengnuo, a native of Nandom and a leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the constituency, said efforts were underway to restore operations at the facility, which has remained inactive for several years.
According to him, the closure of the post office has negatively affected access to postal and courier services for residents of Nandom and neighbouring communities, including Hamile, Lambussie and surrounding areas.
He explained that the facility was strategically established to serve a wide catchment area and its prolonged inactivity had created significant inconvenience for individuals, businesses and institutions that depend on postal and courier services.
Mr Anpengnuo underlined that the commission, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, was committed to ensuring that the facility becomes operational again before the close of the year.
He further stated that the revival of the post office forms part of broader efforts to improve access to postal and courier services, particularly in underserved communities across the country.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nandom, Mr Anthony Ziniel, welcomed the announcement and expressed appreciation to the Acting Executive Secretary for the commitment shown towards addressing the challenge.
The MCE described the planned reopening as a major boost to socio-economic activities in the municipality, stressing that residents had for years been compelled to travel long distances to access postal and related services.
He said the return of the post office would make essential services more accessible to the people, including the purchase and submission of recruitment and application forms, delivery of parcels, receipt of official correspondence and other postal transactions.
“The reopening of the Nandom Post Office will significantly improve service delivery and reduce the burden on residents who currently have to travel outside the Municipality for basic postal services,” he stated.
Residents have also welcomed the development, expressing hope that the facility would be fully rehabilitated and adequately resourced to meet the growing needs of the municipality and surrounding communities.
The reopening of the post office is also expected to enhance communication, support commercial activities and strengthen the delivery of government and private sector services in Nandom and its neighbouring districts.
