A significant security operation led by the Regional Police Command has successfully thwarted an illegal attempt to transport a large quantity of ammunition into the Wa Municipality.

On the evening of June 29, 2026, at approximately 6:00 pm, the Regional Police Operations Unit, acting on credible intelligence, mounted a strategic surveillance operation on routes outside the Wa Township. The operation was launched following reports of a commercial vehicle attempting to bypass official checkpoints using unapproved transit routes.

Police successfully intercepted a KIA TOPIC commercial van (Registration No. UW 139-12) on the outskirts of Kumbiahe, a suburb of Wa.

Upon initial inspection, the vehicle appeared to be carrying floor tiles and general goods. However, a meticulous search conducted by the tactical team—led by Regional Operations Commander DSP Joseph Nakoja, alongside C/Inspr. Muntari Karim, Inspr. Braimah Issah, G/Sgt. Daniel Konadu, and CPA Bayor Koyaaro—revealed the illicit cargo. Concealed beneath the goods were 200 boxes of AA cartridges, totalling 50,000 individual rounds of ammunition.

The driver, Alhassan Issahaku (25), and his assistant, Iddrisu Mashood, were immediately taken into custody. Shortly thereafter, one Alhaji Issahaku (66), a resident of Wa Dobile, arrived at the scene and claimed ownership of the seized ammunition.

In a subsequent development at the police station, a fourth individual, 22-year-old Sharif Alhassan, attempted to obstruct the course of justice by offering a bribe of GHS 12,000 to officers to facilitate the release of the suspects and the confiscated items. The officers on duty firmly rejected the bribe, leading to the immediate arrest of Sharif Alhassan.

All four suspects are currently in police custody, and the ammunition has been secured as a key exhibit. The Regional Police Command has indicated that investigations are ongoing to determine the origin and intended destination of the ammunition.

The case is being handled by No. 52322 G/Cpl. Paul K. Kporworye of the WA DIVCID. Further updates will be provided as the investigation proceeds.
