MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding digital connectivity, improving financial inclusion and supporting economic development as the telecommunications company celebrates 30 years of network service delivery in Ghana.
The milestone was highlighted at the 2026 Media and Stakeholders Forum held at Dellagio Hotel in Wa, where the company outlined its investments, network expansion plans, contributions to national revenue, and initiatives aimed at empowering young people and businesses.
Speaking at the forum, MTN representatives highlighted how telecommunications and mobile money services have transformed everyday life in Ghana, particularly in facilitating financial transactions and connecting communities to economic opportunities.

The company recalled a time when Ghanaian farmers could not conveniently send or receive money, noting that the idea of conducting such transactions remotely once sounded like science fiction. Today, mobile money has become an important tool for financial inclusion, enabling individuals and businesses to conduct transactions more conveniently.

MTN Connects 32 Million Subscribers Nationwide
MTN Ghana disclosed that its network connects approximately 32 million subscribers across the country, underscoring its role in Ghana’s telecommunications industry.
The company also announced that it had invested $1.1 billion in Ghana over the past three years, alongside GH¢4.4 billion in capital investments.
As part of its ongoing efforts to improve network coverage and service quality, MTN is deploying 500 new network sites nationwide.
According to Mr. Augustine Kontome, who is in charge of Network Service, the Upper West Region is expected to benefit from 17 new network sites. The proposed sites will cover communities including Gbare, Jeffisi, and Nabugbelle, among other areas.
The expansion is expected to improve connectivity and support communication and digital service delivery in underserved communities.
MTN described connectivity as a critical driver of commerce, education, national competitiveness, and innovation, emphasising the importance of reliable telecommunications infrastructure to Ghana’s development.
Mobile Money Transactions Continue to Grow
The forum also highlighted developments in MTN’s mobile money business, with the company reporting a 44 per cent increase in transaction values and 3 per cent growth in the number of MoMo users.
These figures reflect the continued importance of mobile money in everyday financial activities, including business transactions, money transfers, and payments for goods and services.
In the Upper West Region, MTN disclosed that it had established 14 channels, or service outlets, to facilitate SIM replacement and mobile money transactions. Five of these outlets are operating in Wa.
The company further indicated that eight additional outlets would be added by the end of November 2026, bringing the total number of channels in the region to 22.
The expansion is expected to improve access to customer support and mobile money services, particularly for subscribers who require assistance with SIM replacement and other transactions.
MTN Contributes Billions of Cedis to Government Revenue
MTN Ghana also highlighted its financial contribution to the country, reporting that it had paid GH¢5.6 billion in direct and indirect taxes.
The company further disclosed that it spent GH¢1.3 billion on fees and statutory payments, demonstrating its contribution to government revenue through taxation and regulatory obligations.
These payments form part of the company’s broader economic footprint in Ghana, alongside its investments in telecommunications infrastructure and digital services.
Youth Skills Training and Community Development
As part of its commitment to youth development, MTN announced plans through the MTN Skills Training Academy to organise training programmes for 100,000 interested participants.
The initiative is intended to provide opportunities for skills development and help participants prepare for employment, entrepreneurship, and other economic opportunities.
The company also announced an increase in the prize for the overall winner of its MTN Heroes of Change initiative, from GH¢100,000 to GH¢400,000.
The increase is expected to strengthen recognition and support for individuals whose initiatives make meaningful contributions to communities across Ghana.
MTN Responds to MoMo Channel Operator’s Loan Repayment Concern
The forum also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to raise concerns about the operational challenges facing mobile money channel operators.
During the engagement, Mr. Joseph Baba Anabiga, General Manager of Lambussie FM, raised a concern regarding the loan repayment period available to Mr. David Nana Addai, MTN’s MoMo Channel Development Manager for Northern Ghana.
In response, Mr. Addai pledged that MTN would extend the loan repayment duration from one month to two months or longer.
The proposed adjustment is expected to provide additional flexibility in repayment arrangements. However, the specific terms and implementation of the extension were not detailed at the forum.
The exchange highlighted the importance of stakeholder engagement in identifying challenges and exploring practical solutions for businesses operating within MTN’s mobile money ecosystem.
Renewed Commitment to Ghana’s Digital Future
As MTN Ghana marks three decades of service delivery, the announcements made at the Wa forum point to continued investment in network infrastructure, mobile financial services, youth development, and community engagement.
For the Upper West Region, the planned 17 new network sites and the expansion of mobile money service channels could improve access to digital services and create opportunities for residents and businesses.
The company’s anniversary also offers an opportunity to reflect on the transformation of communications and financial transactions in Ghana over the past 30 years.
With further network expansion and investment planned, MTN says connectivity will remain central to its contribution to commerce, education, innovation, and national competitiveness.
