The Lawra Municipal Assembly headed by Hon. Cecelia Soyelle has donated 610 pieces of school furniture, comprising 250 dual desks, 260 mono desks and 100 hexagonal tables and chairs, to the Lawra Municipal Education Directorate to help address furniture shortages in schools across the municipality.

Receiving the items on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the Municipal Director of Education, Mr Francis Cudjoe, assured the Assembly that the furniture would be put to good use to improve teaching and learning conditions in beneficiary schools.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Cecelia Soyelle, emphasised the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring that no child in the municipality is forced to sit on the floor or lie on their belly to write or participate in classroom activities due to a lack of furniture.

“No child in Lawra should sit on the floor or lie on their belly to write or learn because of the absence of furniture,” she stated.

She further highlighted the challenges inadequate furniture poses to inclusive education, particularly for children with disabilities.

“Lack of furniture pushes children with disabilities out of the classroom. Today, we are taking a practical step to keep them in school. It’s about dignity,” she noted.

Hon. Soyelle explained that the intervention was driven by accountability and partnership, disclosing that the furniture was procured using the 10 per cent allocation of the Assembly’s share of the Common Fund.

She stressed that the donation was not a one-off intervention, describing it as the second phase of an ongoing initiative to address furniture shortages in the municipality.

According to her, the Assembly has already programmed a third phase in its 2027 Annual Action Plan, with priority expected to be given to deprived schools that continue to experience significant furniture deficits.

The Member of Parliament for Lawra, Lawyer Bede Ziedeng, also urged the Municipal Education Directorate to ensure that the donated furniture was properly managed and put to its intended use.

He acknowledged the persistent challenges confronting some communities in accessing adequate educational infrastructure and logistics but assured residents that efforts were being made, with support from President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, to bridge the existing gaps.

Making reference to Tuma, he highlighted the community’s previous challenges with inadequate school infrastructure, indicating that steps had been taken to address the situation.

In a related development, the Presiding Member of the Lawra Municipal Assembly, Mr Justice Gaanu, donated 1,000 books bearing the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) label to the Municipal Education Directorate for onward distribution to students in need.

The donations form part of broader efforts by local authorities and stakeholders to improve access to quality education and create a more conducive learning environment for pupils across the Lawra Municipality.
