Wa, June 2, 2026 —
The Wa Municipal Chief Executive Alhaji Nurah Issah Danwana has handed over a choked 90-meter drainage site in a key commercial zone to contractors for immediate reconstruction. He described the project as critical for sanitation and business continuity.

Danwana explained that the narrow, heavily silted section had disrupted business activity due to poor drainage and waste buildup. He added that the upgrade aligns with the Assembly’s mandate to keep the city clean.

Project Scope
The reconstruction will include 40 meters of 0.9m U-drain, a 50-meter extension of 1.2m U-drain, and a 70-meter reinforced slab cover over the busy area to prevent hazards. Liftable metal gratings will also be installed at 6-meter intervals to allow for easy desilting. The expanded capacity is expected to improve water flow, end flooding, and support 24-hour economic activity.

Funding
MTN Ghana is covering 70% of the project cost under its corporate social infrastructure program, while the Wa Metropolitan Assembly will provide the remaining 30%. Danwana thanked MTN for the support and expressed hope that the partnership would continue.

Execution
Contractors have been directed to mobilize immediately and complete the work before the heavy rains begin. Engineers will excavate and demolish the failed drain, then backfill and restore the road. Traders and the general public have been urged to bear with temporary access disruptions, especially on market days.

The MCE also noted that a KVIP facility previously connected to the gutter will be addressed with technical solutions to prevent contamination. He appealed to residents to cooperate with workers and help maintain the new infrastructure once completed.
