Residents of the Kachen electoral area in the Sawla-Tuna Kalba District of Ghana’s Savannah Region are enduring severe healthcare hardships, with some traveling over three hours to access basic medical services. The absence of a primary health care facility within the community leaves inhabitants reliant on distant towns such as Kulmasa and Gindabuo, highlighting a glaring neglect by the district assembly and national authorities.

Honorable Ebenezer Salna, the Assembly Member representing Kachen electoral area , voiced his concerns on Info Radio, condemning what he describes as the persistent neglect of his electoral area in the distribution of development projects. Despite repeated appeals from residents and local leaders, he claims Kachen and its surrounding communities have been consistently overlooked in major government interventions.

Overseeing 13 communities, Hon. Salna detailed the dire state of infrastructure and social amenities, including inadequate roads, lack of potable water, and critically, the absence of accessible healthcare facilities. “Our people are forced to travel between three and four hours to reach the nearest health centers in Sawla or Tuna, which is unacceptable,” he lamented.

In response to these challenges, community members have initiated efforts to build a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound through communal labor and contributions. Local residents have already pooled funds to purchase construction materials such as cement, sand, and molded blocks. However, progress has come to a halt due to insufficient financial resources, leaving the community’s health needs unaddressed.

Hon. Salna called on government authorities to prioritize infrastructural development in Kachen, emphasizing that urgent intervention is needed to ensure equitable access to healthcare and basic social amenities. The plight of Kachen underscores a broader issue of neglect faced by rural communities across Ghana, demanding immediate action to bridge the development gap.
